Expansion of the Carlos Relvas Catalogue Raisonné: Beyond Stereoscopic Images

The Early Visual Media Lab is resuming the Carlos Relvas Catalogue Raisonné project, originally launched in 2021. This new phase focuses on expanding the collection beyond stereoscopic images to showcase the other typologies produced by Relvas throughout his prolific career. His work left an extensive legacy that is still being discovered and studied within the History of Portuguese Photography. In addition to exploring these new typologies, this photographic survey aims to cross-reference different subjects and negatives with the various known formats of Relvas’s prints.

The project reinforces long-standing partnerships with several public and private institutions that hold Relvas’s archives, most notably the Casa-Estúdio in Golegã and the Casa dos Patudos in Alpiarça. The work will take place over the coming months, and the digitised photographs, along with their respective online curation, will be presented as the survey progresses.

Following the model established during the first stage of the Catalogue Raisonné, this expansion will include a Photography student through a curricular internship. This reinforces one of the Early Visual Media Lab’s primary goals: opening doors for students to develop projects that allow them to gain experience and knowledge in the field—specifically, in this case, in the photographic reproduction of cultural heritage and the History of Portuguese Photography.
