EVML researchers in “Encontros no ANIM”

On 23 May, researchers Ana David Mendes, Susana Dias and Victor Flores will take part in ‘Encontros no ANIM’, presenting the results of their research projects on the Cinemateca’s collections of stereoscopic views by Carlos Relvas and cosmoramas.

The presentation entitled Hyperarchives and Virtual Heritage: Investigating optical media with the collections of the Cinemateca Portuguesa-Museu de Cinema aims to present two research projects on 19th century visual culture developed from the Cinemateca’s collections, which propose to address some of the current historical and museological challenges through digital Humanities: the Catalogue Raisonné of Carlos Relvas’ Stereoscopic Photography (CICANT, 2019-2021), and the FCT project Curiositas: An Archaeology of Immersive Media through Virtual Reality and Iberian Cosmoramas (CICANT and IHA FCSH / IN2PAST, 2022-). While in Raisonné the stereoscopic views of Carlos Relvas belonging to the Cinemateca were inventoried and combined in a hyperarchive with ten other photography collections by Carlos Relvas and their respective negatives, in the Curiositas research project, the views and optical devices from the 18th and 19th centuries in the Cinemateca will serve as the basis for an experimental recreation, in Virtual Reality, of the Iberian Cosmoramas. By emphasising the methodologies of these investigations, it will be highlighted their potential for mapping and re-signifying audiovisual heritage, as well as their new virtual experiences and iterations, both inside and outside museums.
